$10 million of Will County’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding will be used to “prime the pipeline” for teacher candidates and nursing students who live in Will County and expect to work at a Will County education or healthcare institution, respectively, after graduation. This opportunity is called the Will County Heroes Nursing & Teaching Scholarship.
Will County has awarded four higher education partners – Governors State University, University of St. Francis, Lewis University, and Joliet Junior College – funds to generate a pathway for enrollment, education, and employment. Each institution received $2,500,000. This Monetary Award Program – like (MAP) approach – will award participants $2,500 per semester, or $5,000 per academic year, in college tuition and fees as an education and employment incentive for professionals to stay and work in Will County.
Scholarship dollars will be available through fall 2026 or until funding is exhausted.

Do not complete this form if you are applying as a Dual Credit student; Dual Credit students must submit a separate scholarship application; see accordion links below for more information.
For the summer 2025 semester, applicants will receive an email to their JJC email account with directions on next steps. These next steps include finalizing their semester schedule. Applicants who do not complete the emailed tasks may have their Heroes Scholarship amount reduced or removed from their financial aid account.
For example, an applicant may be initially awarded up to $2,500 for the summer 2025 semester however if the applicant does not register for classes within the emailed timeframe, the awarded amount will be reduced to $0 so that those dollars may be reallocated to another student. Another example includes an applicant who may be initially awarded up to $2,500 for the summer 2025 semester however the applicant only registers for classes costing a total of $1,000 in tuition and fees; within the emailed timeframe, the awarded amount will be reduced from $2,500 to $1,000 so that those surplus dollars may be reallocated to another student.
Those applicants who have their Heroes Scholarship reduced or removed must reapply for consideration of the full $2,500. As this grant comes to an end, applicants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until all dollars are expended. Applicants who reapply because their initial summer 2025 Heroes Scholarship award was reduced or removed will be considered based on the date and time of receipt of their latest summer 2025 Heroes Scholarship application. As dollars are expended, it is possible applicants may be told the grant has concluded and no remaining dollars are available.
